In the framework of the infrastructure project LTER-CWN, six characteristic sites in Austria are expanded into state-of-the-art measuring stations of ecological research. The investigations focus on the effects of extreme climate events on the environment.

In this context researchers are analysing the exchange process of greenhouse gases such as methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide between soil and atmosphere as well as the changing water transport and availability, and the release of nitrogen from soils. The objective is to create a reliable data basis for identifying changes in ecosystems and for understanding the underlying processes.
